Soundplay is a series of works that were conceived as both musical / soundscape compositions and as sound games. The material consists of overlapping soundfiles, melodic and spoken fragments, short solo and ensemble movements fragments and live processing. The material can be combined in different ways, similar to the way in which games have defined players and rules but the exact outcome and more importantly how the game develops is not known.
Currently there are four pieces in the series. Soundplay1 for computer (2004) is an interactive soundscape work that surrounds the listeners with sounds in motion or ‘kinetic music’. In Soundplay2 for violin and computer (2005), through live processing on the computer, the violinist creates and transforms the electroacoustic sounds. Soundplay4 (2005) for two bass clarinets was inspired by watching local basketball games, especially how the defending team is always shadowing the team with the ball.
Soundplay3 (2005) combines elements from the above three pieces with the addition of vocal fragments drawn from the Psalms and Isaiah. It exists in two versions, one for soprano, ensemble and computer, and the other for violin, bass clarinet / clarinet and piano, with the vocal fragments played by the violin and clarinets.
