Research

The major research focus of our program aims to understand the biology the innate immune system in chronic inflammation and its role in chronic disease. Non-diabetic kidney disease, chronic inflammatory bowl disease and other types of chronic disease models are employed in our studies. The molecular biology of the renal epithelium, and the role of inflammation in renal injury and fibrosis are significant interests in the laboratory. New projects emerging in the laboratory will examine the role of the innate immune system in iatrogenic inflammation.

Our laboratory has recently merged with other clinician scientist laboratories at the University of Calgary to form one large collaborative basic science research program relevant to human disease. Faculty include Dr. LeeAnne Tibbles (transplantation rejection and BK polyomavirus), Dr. Paul Beck (inflammatory bowel disease and colitis), Dr. Regine Mydlarski (immunodermatology), Dr Wenjie Wang (renal fibrosis), Dr. Sofia Ahmed (translational physiology). A translational component with direct links to clinical samples, databases and epidemiology are a major strength of this group.
