Research

The major research focus of our program aims to understand the biology the innate immune system in chronic inflammation and its role in chronic disease. Specifically our group is interested in the biology of the Nod-like receptor (NLR) family of proteins and inflammasomes in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease. The role of inflammation and NLRs in the molecular biology of the renal epithelium, in renal injury and fibrosis are significant interests in the laboratory. Our group has also established a kidney disease biobank that will provide a direct link to clinical samples as well as a clinicopathologic database to enable biomarker discovery, renal pathology research and molecular disease classification. The biology of NLRs and inflammation in other disease models such as chronic inflammatory bowl disease and chronic heart disease are also significant interests of our group. New projects emerging in the laboratory will examine the role of the innate immune system in iatrogenic inflammation.

Our laboratory is part of the Immunology Research Group, Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases. We work in close collaboration with other clinician scientist laboratories at the University of Calgary to form one large collaborative basic science research program focused on NLRs and human disease. Collaborators include include Dr. Paul Beck (inflammatory bowel disease and colitis), Dr. Bertus Ecksteen (autoimmune and inflammatory liver disease), Dr Hank Duff (cardiovascular disease), and Dr. Justin MacDonald (biochemistry and protein structure/function). A translational component with direct links to clinical samples, databases and epidemiology are a major strength of this group.
